Two new entries to our red area this week. The first is Still Got Time by Zayn ft. PARTYNEXTDOOR, a new entry at #24. The second is Green Light by Lorde, which has been around since near enough the start of the month but has recently trended, and is now at a new peak of #26.
Not content with batting off half a dozen records by Drake in the previous issue, we're now reviewing a record that sounds like him. (Well, like Passionfruit and Blem anyway…) Zayn and PARTYNEXTDOOR's new record Still Got Time (#24) is a faux-tropical piece with gregarious guitar and stridulating percussion perfect for Zayn's lightweight vocals but not for PARTYNEXTDOOR's, whose laboured, heavy, autotuned vocals are the equivalent of following a nice healthy roast chicken salad with a Mississippi mud pie. I'd also add an instrumental chorus to the end because it feels a bit short, but certainly there are the guts of a big hit there.
In fairness, at least its guts are intact. At #26 this week is Green Light by Lorde, and its guts are spread all over the pavement like those of someone who's blown themselves up. I don't like the near acapella introduction, but that piano riff before each chorus is irresistible, and the almost cheerleader-like chorus of "I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it" is to die for. My biggest problem with this is that it has the feel of a longer track culled to size; if we were the producer, we would take off the choruses over the outro, leave it two lines, add another verse (you could probably get away with setting the first two lines to music), pre-chorus, chorus and then leave the outro exactly as is. There is no harm is having a record more than four minutes long.
And to this week's charts, where a nice bit of tart has cut through Sheeran's stranglehold in the top three. Symphony follows it, knocking Castle on the Hill back to #5. (And to all you people thinking I meant either Larsson or Clean Bandit's Grace Chatto by "a nice bit of tart", go hang your head in shame.)
